The Serralves Foundation is a cultural institution with a contemporary view on Art and Landscape. It is one of the most important cultural institutions in Portugal and the most relevant in the North of Portugal. The Foundation's entire landscape and architectural heritage was classified as a National Monument in 2012, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the House and the Serralves Park. The Foundation is located in a central area of Porto, with good access from the historical center and the main roadways, either by car or by public transport networks.
The Serralves Foundation is a cultural centre, occupying a total area of 18 hectares. Na outstanding cultural complex- including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Villa and Park- the Foundation was classified in 2012 as a National Monument due to the “relevance and uniqueness of its heritage, including both its architecture and landscaped gardens.” Designed by the architect, Álvaro Siza Vieira - 1992 Pritzker Prize winner – the Museum has 14 rooms that display exhibitions by leading national and internacional artists, dance, music and performances, amongst many other activities. Visiting Serralves Villa constitutes a trip back in time: this unique example of Art Deco architecture dates back to the 1930s. The interior design involved leading European furniture designers: Emile Jacques Ruhlmann, René Lalique and Edgar Brandt. Many of the original details can still be seen in Serralves Villa. The 18-hectare Serralves Park consists of a wide variety of magnificent, harmoniously interconnected spaces: formal gardens, woodlands and a traditional farm. Designed by the architect Jacques Gréber in the 1930s, the Park is a unique example of landscape heritage in Portugal. Visitors to the Park, will encounter works from the Serralves Collection on permanent display.
