The city of Guimarães has been chosen to be the European Green Capital for 2026.
This recognition, announced in Valencia, Spain, celebrates Guimarães’ exceptional environmental leadership. Competing with Heilbronn (Germany) and Klagenfurt (Austria), the city excelled in areas such as air quality, biodiversity, and circular economy.
Guimarães’ journey to this achievement reflects over a decade of dedicated climate action. As one of 100 European cities committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2030, Guimarães has spearheaded initiatives like the Guimarães 2030 Plan. The city is also a proud signatory of the Green City Accord and holds the prestigious Mission Label from the European Commission, actively contributing to EU Missions on oceans, soils, and climate change, with numerous projects underway.
